Thorn Michaels is a Seattle-based lighting designer of theatre, dance and opera. As the 2016-2017 Gilbert Hemsley intern, she spent nine months serving as assistant lighting designer and assistant lighting supervisor for the Lincoln Center Festival, San Francisco Opera, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, and New York City Ballet.
Her most recent work as a designer includes The Tender Land and Robin Hood for Seattle Opera; Brooklyn Bridge at Seattle Children's Theatre; Ironbound and Grounded at Seattle Public Theater; The Two-Character Play with Civic Rep (for which she was nominated for a Theatre Puget Sound Gregory Award for Outstanding Lighting Design, 2015); Strictly Seattle and The Bridge Project with Velocity Dance Center, where she is Resident Lighting Designer; SOAP Fest with West of Lenin; and Twelfth Night, Cold Empty Terrible, and Thieves and Beggars with the University of Washington, Seattle. In June 2016, Thorn completed her MFA in lighting design from the University of Washington.
Thorn is a life-long nerd and lover of science fiction, horror cinema, and Victorian literature. She is also an inveterate baker, amateur rock violinist, and aspiring Marx Brother.
